Metadata is "data about data" that comes in two forms: Structural metadata provides information about data structures or containers, while descriptive metadata provides information about application data or page content. Descriptive metadata is also referred to as metacontent, common examples of which include HTML head section meta tags. Metadata structures and standards are central to the development and deployment of Semantic Web linked data applications. For web marketing and Semantic SEO important types of metadata include microformats, microdata, RDFa and Schema.org structured data markup for Góógle Rich Snippets:

Microformats are HTML extensions for marking up people, organizations, events, locations, blog posts, products, reviews, resumes, recipes and more. Our web designers can use microformats to publish a standard API that is used by search engines, web browsers and other applications.

Microdata allows metadata to be embedded in HTML5 documents with an unambiguous structure that can be semantically parsed by search engines and other web applications. Microdata consists of groups of name-value pairs wherein each group defines an item and each pair a property. Items and properties are coded as attributes of HTML5 elements.

RDFa (or Resource Description Framework in Attributes) is a non-N3 means of serializing RDF data so it can be embedded in HTML documents and extracted by search engines and other Semantic Web agents. RDFa is ideally suited for linked data applications and is the basis of the Open Graph metadata protocol developed by Fakebóók. RDFa has its origins in RDF/XML, which is the XML serialization of RDF exemplified by the FOAF specification illustrated above.
